Get your hay tested for nutritional quality

The Agriculture Branch provides hay testing for both producers and livestock owners.

Hay sample analysis provides valuable information on feed quality and specific information regarding the nutritional quality of your feed.

We will test your sample for:

  • moisture,
  • dry matter,
  • crude protein,
  • minerals (calcium, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, sodium) and
  • acid detergent fiber content.

Additional tests or calculated values can be added to the results depending on the type of animal the hay is intended for, such as cattle or horses.

Getting your hay tested

Hay producers

If you produce hay in Yukon, Agriculture Branch staff can come out to take hay samples, talk to you about your hay and consult on what information you are looking for.

Email agriculture@gov.yk.ca or call 867-667-5838 to set up an appointment.

Livestock owners

For non-producers, we will test 1 hay sample per year. If you purchase your hay locally, ask your supplier if they already have test information available to share with you. This will help us to avoid duplicate testing of the same hay crop.

To submit a hay sample for testing, fill a large freezer bag (8″ x 10″) from a few different sections of your hay supply. This will provide results that are more accurate.

On the sample, indicate where it is from, the year if it is older hay, and any other descriptors that help identify the sample, along with types of animals it is intended for and your contact information.

Bring your sample to the Agriculture Branch office, located at

Room 320 in the Elijah Smith Building
300 Main Street in Whitehorse, Yukon.

Our office hours are Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
