Underutilized Land Initiative

Yukon agricultureThis initiative is designed to improve the utilization of existing, titled farm land that was developed for agricultural use prior to April 1, 2003, and has not been used for agriculture for several years.

Eligible activities

Activities may include, but are not limited to:

  • removal of tree and shrub re-growth, rocks and roots;
  • minor drainage and land levelling;
  • discing and rototilling;
  • seed bed preparation, fertilizer and seed;
  • fencing of improved (seeded) pasture that otherwise could not be used for grazing;
  • equipment rental, third-party labour and contractor services.

Note that the actual land area to be redeveloped must meet the criteria for agricultural development. (The criteria are available through the Agriculture Branch.)

Eligible applicants

Individuals who hold title to agricultural land in Yukon that was cleared for agriculture prior to April 1, 2003, but is now in forest re-growth. Applicants will have to provide a development plan that describes how the activity will contribute to an increase in agricultural land use and commercial production.

Eligible funding

Assistance may be provided up to 50% of the actual costs for individuals to a maximum of $250 per hectare. This initiative will not fund land that was previously improved with assistance from other federal or territorial programs.
