What Are Type II Mine Sites?

Gabions ensure the creek banks are stable“Type II Mines” refers to seven mine sites which were identified at the time of devolution with the potential for unfunded environmental liabilities at the time of closure. They could pose substantial damage to the environment as well as financial liability to the government.

The term "Type II Mine Sites" comes from chapter six of the Devolution Transfer Agreement (DTA)  883 KB. This chapter details environmental responsibilities and obligations associated with the transfer of lands previously under the management of the Northern Affairs Program of the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development (DIAND) to the Yukon government. Devolution of these responsibilities took place on April 1, 2003.

Some of these mines are under active care and maintenance by the owner/operator while the government manages other mine sites. The DTA provides key principles for management of these sites.
