New report outlines geothermal heat and power potential in Yukon

The Government of Yukon and the Canadian Geothermal Energy Association have released a report on the potential for geothermal energy in Yukon. According to the Yukon Geothermal Opportunities and Applications report  86.9 MB, Yukon’s geothermal potential could be more than 1,700 MW of energy. This is 18 times the current energy supplied by Yukon’s renewable electrical system (90 MW).

Biomass Pilot Project funded

Following the recent adoption of the Yukon Biomass Energy Strategy, the Yukon government is funding a pilot biomass project exploring the use of wood chips made from waste wood from the Whitehorse landfill and construction projects to heat the buildings at Raven Recycling.

Yukon biomass energy strategy

The Yukon Biomass Energy Strategy will facilitate the development of a biomass energy sector to help heat buildings and homes using wood, Yukon’s primary biomass resource.

Commercial energy incentives

Retrofit condos or apartments to improve energy performance, and reduce energy consumption, costs and emissions. Improve the lighting efficiency of commercial and institutional buildings by upgrading to energy efficient and long lasting LED lighting systems.

Good Energy residential incentives

The Good Energy rebate program has expanded its scope with the addition of the residential incentives program. Incentives are now offered for:

  • renovations that improve insulation levels, air tightness, and ventilation,
  • new super-insulated homes that achieve an EnerGuide rating of 85 or better,
  • installation of small-scale, residential renewable energy systems.
