5 year review of Forest Resources Act

The Government of Yukon is beginning a review of Yukon’s Forest Resources Act
[ 562 KB]

The act is the first natural resources legislation to have been developed in Yukon since devolution. The legislation includes a provision mandating a review of the legislation five years after its initial passage.

Phase one of the review will begin with discussions between Yukon government, First Nations, Renewable Resource Councils, forest industry representatives and conservation groups to determine the best process for reviewing the act.

Phase two of the review, which will explore possible amendments, is expected to begin in 2017. The public will also have opportunities to provide input throughout the review process.

Yukon’s Forest Management branch plans to engage with First Nations, industry, Renewable Resource Councils and conservation groups in the summer of 2016 to explore the process and timing of the review. We expect the process will extend into 2018/19 with potential legislative amendments.

Opportunities for public involvement will be identified throughout the process, with formal consultation on any proposed amendments planned for 2017.
