In Yukon forest planning is done at three levels, the regional, sub-regional and operational. These plans lead to sustainable use of the forests and define the land base and practices that are to be used in forest management.
The Yukon is divided into 13 Forest Management Units and 14 First Nation Traditional Territories. Out of common need, First Nation Governments and Yukon Government have agreed to jointly develop forest management plans that will apply to both First Nation and public lands. Therefore, forest management planning is moving away from using forest management units in favor of defining the planning areas as the First Nations traditional territories. Implementation and final approval of forest management plans rests with the mandated party.
These plans are considered forest resource management plans as per chapter 17 of First Nations Settlement agreements. Two chapter 17 plans have been completed to date; the Strategic Forest Management Plan for the Champagne and Aishihik and the Forest Management Plan for the Teslin Tlingit traditional territories.
There are two strategic plans underway for the Kaska and Trondek Gwichin traditional territories.
There are operational level plans developed for operational purposes in most of the Yukon. These operational plans are landscape level timber harvesting projects that take into consideration the strategic level plan directions. In the absence of strategic level plans operational plans are managed in a manner that First Nations and the public are provided opportunity to provide input to ensure landscape land regionally important issues are addressed.
2 MB identifies those Yukon lands that are protected, interim protected, special management areas, First Nations settlement lands, parks, protected areas, etc.
