The Government of Yukon is working on developing a set of regulations to assist in creating the process and tools that will enable us to manage potential environmental damage caused by off-road vehicles (ORVs). Development of off-road vehicle (ORV) regulations for public land is a response to a recomendation brought forward by the Select Committee on the Safe Operation and Use of Off-road Vehicles (March 2011), which outlined the need for effective regulation and enforcement to protect the environment from damage caused by ORVs.
To this end, we have already amended the Territorial Lands (Yukon) Act, introducing two main tools for protection:
ORV Management areas are areas that need better management and protection from damage by off-road vehicles or areas that need to recover after damage has taken place. Protection orders can be issued for a period of 90 days which provides the time to assess what needs to be done to manage and protect an area. These tools will only apply in summer months, as the legislation does not capture snowmobiles or snow machines.
Now that we have these tools in place, we need to decide on the details of how we use them. Work on the new regulations will begin once the analysis of the consultation results is completed.
