Major Mine Licensing - Minto

General InformationLocation of the Minto mine on a map

Located 240 km northwest of Whitehorse, the Minto mine is the first hard rock mine to operate within the Yukon since Brewery Creek.

Sherwood Copper started producing concentrate in July of 2007 and the first truckloads of concentrates were delivered on July 16, 2007 to the Port of Skagway Ore Terminal. Commercial production was declared on October 1, 2007 and regular shipments have been underway since that date.

An amendment to the company’s Quartz Mining License has been approved which allows Sherwood to increase production to 3,200 tonnes of ore per day.

Ongoing exploration adjacent to the main ore body (Area 2) has produced very promising results and may extend the life of the mine well past its projected 7-year life span.

Yukon Energy’s completion of a hydro transmission line from Carmacks to Pelly Crossing, with a spur line to the Minto mine, has allowed the Minto mine and the community of Pelly Crossing to switch from diesel to hydroelectricity, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 24,100 tonnes per year.

*Water Licenses (Type A and Type B) for this project are available online.
