Whitehorse Copper Tailings Reprocessing and Reclamation Project


General Information

The Whitehorse Copper Tailings Reprocessing and Reclamation Project involves the reprocessing of tailings located at the old Whitehorse Copper site near the Mt. Sima Road. Magnetite, which is a source of iron, would be extracted from the tailings and trucked to Skagway.

Eagle Industrial Minerals Corporation are proposing to process 12,000 tonnes per day, for 6 to 7 months during the snow free season, producing 250 to 350 thousand tonnes per year of magnetite over a duration of 6 to 7 years and employing up to 20 people seasonally. The project will also involve reclamation of the site for possible future industrial development.

A revised surface lease has been issued by the EMR Lands Branch that provides Eagle Whitehorse LLC with:

  • Ownership of the existing tailings and waste rock on the site;  
  • Requirement to submit a tailing processing and operation plan and a reclamation and closure plan, along with other ancillary plans as required  to address  the assessment or regulatory requirements; 
  • Payment of security pursuant to the requirements of the Quartz Mining Act; and
  • Payment of royalty in accordance with the requirements of the Quartz Mining Act.

The company has submitted a project proposal to YESAB and is currrently undergoing adequacy.
