Amendments to Yukons Oil & Gas Act

The Department of Energy, Mines and Resources’ Mineral Resources Branch is proposing amendments to Yukon's Oil and Gas Act 1.5 MB.

Background

The Yukon Oil and Gas Act 1.5 was enacted in 1997 as a result of the devolution of oil and gas resources from Canada to Yukon. The Act is structured to apply to all oil and gas operations in Yukon. In addition to the Act, the Yukon government has enacted 5 regulations: Disposition, Royalty, Drilling and Production, Geoscience Explorations and Licence Administration Regulations. The regulations can be found on the Oil and Gas Resources Legislation web page

Since the implementation of the Act over twelve years ago, the Yukon government has kept track of a number of updates needed for the Act. The updates include:

  • modernization to reflect current industry practices and operations in Canada;
  • changes to provisions that are no longer applicable due to the passing of prescribed time periods or the completion of requirements;
  • aligning Yukon’s oil and gas legislation with common law provisions for consultation with First Nations; and
  • new provisions that allow for the development of additional regulations to manage the emerging Yukon oil and gas industry sector.

Public Consultation

The consultation period is now closed. Public consultation on the proposed amendments ran from July 29, 2009 until September 14, 2009. To assist with the public review, the government provided the following documents:

The consultation process included correspondence from, and discussions and meetings with First Nations, industry representatives, conservation groups and interested members of the public. Digital copies of submissions from the public and First Nations are available below. In addition, Energy, Mines and Resources staff have prepared a What We Heard document, providing an overview of consultation submissions. Staff have provided supplemental information and responses regarding amendments based on comments submitted.
