Government's role in oil and gas development

The regulatory framework for oil and gas development

The development of Yukon’s oil and gas resources are subject to strong regulatory requirements and safeguards to protect human health, wildlife, water, land and air.

The Oil and Gas Resources branch within the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources operates primarily under the Yukon Oil and Gas Act. The Act covers a wide variety of areas, including regulation of activities, collection of royalties and ensuring protection of the environment.

Other government departments, branches and agencies play important roles in ensuring Yukon’s hydrocarbon resources are responsibly regulated, developed and managed.
